Originating from one of the holiest cities in Persia, this gorgeous antique 1920’s Persian Mashhad rug has a soulful presence. The central octofoil medallion with an ivory ground and fuchsia, sapphire blue, beige, and hints of hunter green catches the eye with its beautiful design. There is a little bit of wear surrounding it, but the foundation has recently been reinforced to ensure another lifetime of use.
There is a secondary octofoil medallion surrounding the center one with a midnight blue ground that provides a majestic juxtaposition against it and the fuchsia ground of the central field. The light blue spade-like motif in the spandrels adds a whimsical and charming feel to the design of this fantastic rug.
Although the amazing border bands that make up a good portion of the rug are a perfect complement to the central field, the main border with the ivory ground and fantastic floral motif really makes it special. The overall curvilinear botanical design of this beauty illustrates the feminine spirit infused into it by the women who wove it by hand.
Natural materials were used to dye the wool, such as vegetables, plants, roots, and other organic resources which have aged nicely. This is a great size for a rug at almost 10 x 14 and the wear is exceptionally beautiful.
