This is an outstanding antique tribal rug from the Northwest Mountains of Persia. It is distinct and in its own class for a myriad of reasons; there are notes to be taken on this rug that really tell its song and story. Let's get some of the basics first...the grand size. Most Persia Heriz rugs and similar rugs from surrounding areas are made in smaller room sizes. This palatial beauty was undoubtedly woven on order a century ago based on the size and color story. The size was cherished then, as it is today, and will be by its next keeper. To find this rug is like landing a jackpot rug for your home.
At about 8x15, it would be phenomenal for a grand entry, den, or to grace a long dining room table. Another spectacular feature is the departure from classical colors that dominate most Persian rugs. Here we have beautiful abstract motifs with hints of botanical themes against a deep melon ground that leans into burnt orange-rust like tones. This magnificent piece actually has so much to show off, with all its vegetable dyes and the variation of those very dyes throughout the rug. Many different batches of wool were used by the women on the loom to produce this palace size rug and it took years with multiple weavers.
Here is where the history of this early 1900s rug just gets better. In the antique rug world, the age and origin of a rug is detected from looking at the underside of the rug... it's truly the rug's DNA. When we are looking at the weave of this rug, you'll see two different weaving techniques used on one half of the rug versus the other half. We see the Heriz weave and also a Gharajeh weave on this rug and it tells us a woman or women came by from a nearby village to lend their hands and expert skills, born in their own tribe, to help weave this rug. It's a beautiful labor of love and a century old rug with great presence and history.
The wool is in nice condition and the rug is extremely durable, which will be able to withstand a high traffic area. Overall, this gorgeous rug has remained in wonderful condition and only has some minor areas of wool loss as shown in pics. She's a true gem with magnificent characteristics, color, and style. Priced at an amazing value for an extraordinary rug.
Please note: This Persian is fully intact and in great shape for its age. Due to the handmade nature of this rug, the width ranges from 7'5 - 7'10. This is completely organic and due to the time and labor it took to weave this rug...old rugs are never perfectly straight. Please also note and see pics of a few minor spots of wear as well which shows loss of wool.
