Oh, what a unique size and rug! This is a late 19th Century Persian rug from Mashhad is on a navy-midnight blue ground, with an all over Herati (fish design) pattern. If you look closely, the hooked elements in the field are fish and they surround flower heads. This design is also known as water garden design. This rug truly tells a story of the artisans and their surroundings as they sat and wove. The borders that you see exhibit turtles in geometric form.
This Mashhad is a phenomenal piece of history and at great value. It is low pile and in great shape for its age with light, scattered wear that is of character earned naturally through time.
If you've landed here for this size and style, you've nailed an absolute Persian gem and an heirloom. It was likely hand woven for the elite for this is a custom size and undoubtedly took several months to a few years to weave.
Low Pile, hand woven circa 1880 with vegetable dyed wool.
