This fantastic and heavy bodied antique 1880s Persian Bidjar rug uniquely combines bold geometric elements with ornate motifs and its presence is simply magnificent. A remarkable open field with an inspiring central medallion anchored with top and tribal motifs set the stage with bold design that commands attention.
The beautiful spandrels in each corner have a French blue ground that we love with a sage green lattice that are the perfect background to the lovely smaller scale botanical motifs.
The intricately designed borders with several bands of skillfully woven art include botanical motifs and abstract patterns with a vibrant color story. The main border, on an ivory ground features turtle elements.
Exceptional and masterful dying of the wool with natural dyes gives it a stunning display of colors. The design of this oversize piece will add scale and great dimensions when styled and will be an absolute statement piece. This oversized Persian is grand and has wear and character earned through time. With its expansive size, it was likely woven on order and for Persian royalty.
Bidjar rugs are known for being the iron rugs of Persia because of their use of superior wool, with each knot being pounded down, making for the most densely woven wool rich rug out there. This is a heavy duty rug because of the sturdy construction and the quality of the wool, meaning it will take a beating and keep on ticking. Aging like fine wine, there is some scattered wear that brings a lot of character to this floor art. It is a testament to the extremely fine craftmanship of this antique rug that will continue to last for generations to come.
