Here’s an antique Persian Ferahan, a well-loved rug from the early 1900s, woven with a remarkably tight and durable weave that speaks to the craftsmanship once reserved for royalty. Ferahan rugs were historically made for Persian aristocrats and nobility, and this piece carries that legacy — even now, in its worn and time-softened condition.
The design features a highly detailed pattern of scrolling botehs (paisleys), symbolic of life and eternity, spread across the field in a rhythmic way. Between the vines and paisleys are stylized floral forms and seed motifs, suggesting abundance and renewal. The field is grounded by a beautiful worn terracotta-red tone, with accents of ivory, navy, and soft blues layered in with delicate precision.
Though the rug shows scattered wear and has a low pile from decades of life underfoot, it is full of love and life to keep telling its story in a new home. Its borders frame the piece with lovely geometric and floral motifs, and there’s a visible mastery in the spacing and proportion of the art.
Handwoven with vegetable dyed wool. A true heirloom and a rare example of Persian Ferahan weaving from the first quarter of the 20th century.
