Bespeaking age, history and soul, here's an old treasure that's a little different in the collection! This is an antique saddle bag face, a flat weave Soumak from the tribal weavers of the Caucasus mountains. It's an outstanding example of nomadic art with an all over pattern that is finely drawn with great use of natural dyes, decorative contrast and with lovely abrash featured as well.
This bag face was once upon a time a saddle bag that was used by the tribe members on their livestock (typically camels, but also donkeys, and horses) to hold, carry and transport their goods. Typically, there would be two pouches bridged by a middle section that would sit on the back of the camel. For older pieces such as this one, it is only the bag face that we are left to cherish. This is in wonderful condition and is a flat weave, tribal piece that can be used to hang on the wall, placed on a vanity or credenza or on the floor for a great spot that needs a little love and interior richness.
