From the mountainous Karabagh region from just north of Persia, this circa 1900 old weaving on a chocolate brown ground has design and color scheme much like the antique Caucasian rugs with contrasting colors as well as tribal geometric motifs and patterns. Karabagh rugs were generally woven in small workshops or individual homes in their small villages. If you look closely, you will also see animal elements and a little woman woven in.
This piece has luxurious and weighted wool you cannot miss... it is simply quite stout and solid! It has a bit more coarse wool than other rugs and is double wefted with a little bit of a higher pile, showing off its immense quality.
Please note, this rug is slightly less wide on one side of the rug at 3'6 with the other at 3'9. This is very normal and telling of its hand woven nature and age, from circa 1920!
