Woven circa 1880, this is a tribal runner from the Caucasus mountains with amazing natural dyes that change throughout. It is worn to perfection, with character earned through time. The motifs that you see running down the field represent running water. The weavers of this mountain area lived in harsh conditions and their spirited nature is deeply rooted. They believed that running water was indeed precious and considered it sacred. It also was symbolic for inner purification.
Condition: Low pile; It has wear, with a couple of tiny losses of wool that have been patched/secured from the back, please see pics. One end of the runner has a curvy border, lending more to the fact that this rug is super old and handmade. All the dyes you see are completely natural, from all the resources the tribespeople had around to use (veggies, plants and flowers).
