This old Persian Kurdish has a certain charm that will never cease. It’s a tribal rug with rugged wool, natural dyes, and sits on a wool foundation that transports you back in time when you look at it. The earthiness of this nomadic rug from late 19th Century is quite evident and grounding. What you see woven in the field is a small scale paisley design, which was symbolism for life.
The loom the woman sat behind came with quite a view, imagine a landscape of mountains and a life which was quite elementary and simple. She lived in a tent. The loom she had was not sophisticated; It was small and able to be transported if need be while she traveled with her family, her tribe. Her rug weaving was a true art and part of life, just as it was fore the women who came before her. It has been said that the Kurds have been around the Azerbaijan region since BC.
The size on this piece has a great presence and is larger than we typically see them!
