The values that shape the artistic endeavors of master craftswomen are beautifully displayed in this antique Kazak rug. The powerful central field design includes three medallions in alternating colors of brick red, beige, sapphire blue, and ivory against a chocolate brown ground.
The ram’s horn motif is prominently displayed at the center of each medallion, which symbolizes masculinity and fertility. Symbolizing femininity and fertility, the star motif can be seen throughout the central field in varying colors.
The hook motif is all over this beauty and is meant to ward off the evil eye. The border design is inspired by the Caucasus Mountains that the craftswomen lived and worked by, with a zigzag mountain motif in cornflower blue, brick red, and beige against an ivory ground.
Woven circa 1880-1900, this fantastic, tribal rug was handwoven with a wool foundation and wool dyed with contrasting organic, vegetable dyes that Kazak is known for. Although this amazing rug has been love worn, it has an enduring spirit that would look great any space.
