Woven circa 1920, this small Persian rug is a tightly exhibits a refined and rhythmic boteh design — a flame- or seed-like motif often interpreted as fertility, protection, or life’s potential. The allover design on this Persian offers calm repetition, while each boteh holds its own subtle variations in red and muted green atop a bone ivory wool ground.
The main border features what looks like a caterpillar-like scrolling vine motif, flanked by angular secondary guards. Along the very edge, a jagged "fence of security" design adds a final layer of symbolic protection — an intentional detail from the weaver to ward off the unknown.
This piece shows scattered wear consistent with age and use, but the wool pile is still healthy and the structure is strong. Handwoven with vegetable dyed wool nearly a century ago, it's a wonderfully expressive piece for entryways, offices, or layered spaces where small-scale antiques shine.
