This is an exquisite 1880s Lavar, finely woven with vegetable dyed wool and rich with historic elegance. The field is filled with intricate curvilinear art — floral vines, palmettes, and pendulous botehs that wind with intentional grace, all layered across a soft, dusty rose pink ground that has mellowed beautifully over time. It’s a pretty distinct Lavar in the collection, in color and art.
The design is a sophisticated display of Persian workshop weaving, where symmetry is masterfully blended with delicate movement. The border frames the rug with precision — a pattern with paisleys and cypress trees, anchoring the whole piece with contrast and visual clarity.
It is low pile throughout with a lovely handle. This piece has a tight weave, which is a great characteristic of these fine Persians, and it is in good condition for its age. A couple of small, threadbare spots — each no larger than a dime — are visible on close inspection and speak gently to its 140+ year journey. Lavar Persians are very graceful rugs, with curvilinear art that has beautiful flow and beauty.
