This is an old village rug, hand knotted by tribal weavers of S H I R A Z, which happens to be home to the famous Qashqai tribe. S H I R A Z is in the southwest region of the P E R S I A. Majority of these tribal gems were woven around this size, and are woven with wool, on a wool foundation. They have an asymmetrical knot and are from 100% vegetable dyed wool that came from natural resources (vegetables, fruits, plants).

S H I R A Z rugs are not known to be from village factories as they were typically woven by women in the home. Once finished, they would be taken to the main bazaars to sold, to be exported, etc.

About this rug: From the 1880s, this S H I R A Z has 3 large diamond medallions in the field with geometric flowers and paisleys scattered throughout. Sitting on a midnight blue ground (dye comes from indigo), it features an intricate design and sensational folk art. This rug has different batches of dyes and the art is quite telling. The corners of the rug within the field are independently unique with color and design woven. It is a late 19th Century gem that is pretty even worn, with a couple of minor bruises. It has one minor area with loss to foundation that was re-secured and one tiny spot on the border that has wool loss. Please see pics.

This is definitely a hard wearing rug that is durable and displays immense character, showing off its beautiful age of over 100 years. It would look great on a hard wood floor as well as on stone. The strength in its earthy and natural color ways is soothing and bold at the same time. It is a low pile, but a thick rug with old world wool you can truly feel, and it has a great size for styling.
