A bold beauty from the first quarter of the 20th century, this antique Persian Mahal comes in at 9’7 x 12’7 and is fierce in all the right ways. The ground is a rich, jewel-toned red, softened in places by time and wear, the center field is low pile — while the borders remain plush with wool, like a frame still holding strong around the art.
Its design is classic and easy to work with: a balanced all-over pattern of stylized rosettes, leafy palmettes, and scrolling vines that bloom and stretch with gentle symmetry. A handful of medallion-like motifs punctuate the field, each flanked by feathery sprays and floral bursts. There’s a touch of structure, but enough looseness to keep it charmingly organic — unmistakably village weave.
Made with vegetable-dyed wool, this piece carries a gorgeous, warm palette of madder red, charcoal, muted blush, mossy green, and inky blue. Scattered wear gives it a lived-in, storied feel, and while it’s softened by age, the construction is solid and the soul is very much intact.
