Small Antique Chinese Rug / 3’2 x 5’8 Chinese Rug #3726

Regular price $675.00

This antique Chinese rugs carries a very old soul - something about its floppy handle, luminous wool with lanolin oils trapped in, a soft camel ground, and rich symbolism - it makes me think based on these qualities, it’s an antique Ningxia, or possibly Fette, woven in the tradition of Chinese rugs made for temple use, aristocratic homes, or scholar’s quarters.

The design is packed with meaning: a central medallion surrounded by auspicious symbols, intricate roundels, and a classic Greek key border, an ancient motif representing protection and continuity. Soft blues and deep corals give it warmth, while the faded, timeworn wool only adds to its charm.

This rug has soft to the touch wool that is floppy with a  loose weave, a departure from the sturdier Peking Chinese rugs, making it feel more like an older Chinese weaving from Inner Mongolia. It’s worn, marked by life, with every imperfection telling a story of its journey through time. Whether it’s a Fette or Ningxia, it’s s undeniably special. The kind of piece that doesn’t just decorate a space, but lives and breathes history.

Low pile. Worn. From circa 1880. Woven with vegetable dyed wool.
